Beautifully fashioned as delicate sprays of myrtle, with tiny flowers and leaves rising from slender silver stems, the design resembles a miniature garden. The tiara would have adorned a bride's hair, while the matching corsage ornament could have been worn on a bodice or lapel. It is particularly lovely to find the two pieces surviving together.

Myrtle has been associated with love and marriage since antiquity and was sacred to Venus, the Roman goddess of love. As an evergreen, it also symbolised enduring affection and fidelity. The tradition became especially fashionable during the Victorian period. Queen Victoria wore a wreath of orange blossom for her wedding in 1840, while myrtle became an important part of royal bridal tradition when her eldest daughter married in 1858. Cuttings from the myrtle growing at Osborne House would eventually feature in the wedding bouquets of generations of royal brides.

Unlike fresh bridal flowers, which would inevitably fade, a silver wedding wreath could be treasured long after the ceremony. A comparable nineteenth-century floral tiara is illustrated in Diana Scarisbrick's Tiara (2000), associated with Emily Bootle-Wilbraham, who married the future Earl of Crawford and Balcarres in 1869. A rare and enchanting survival of Victorian wedding traditions, and a beautiful piece of jewellery history that would be quite extraordinary to wear today.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0373/3428/6475/files/mid-19th-century-victorian-silver-leaf-marriage-tiara-and-matching-corsage-pin-brooch-parkin-and-gerrish-antique-and-vintage-jewellery-561905.jpg?v=1751910208
https://parkinandgerrish.com/de/products/victorian-silver-myrtle-bridal-tiara-matching-corsage-brooch
