Mid Century Silver & Marcasite Buckle Brooch
This is a wonderful impressive buckle brooch. It is set in silver and is decorated with marcasites. It was imported into London in 1964, however, it is of American origin and dates 1950s. We love its timeless look, as well as its versatility.
The buckle motif was first popularised in the Victorian era as a symbol of eternity, loyalty, protection, and strength. It was also a symbol of mourning- the buckle holds the memory of a loved one close. It was used as a romantic gesture for the same reasons.
However, why the motif gained popularity in America is slightly different story. One of the most iconic pieces of American jewellery, the iconic aquamarine and ruby Belt Buckle necklace, was designed in 1935 by Fulco di Verdura for Paul Flato. It was originally commissioned by Cole Porter for his wife Linda Lee Porter. Paul Flato is often referred to as the original “jeweler to the stars.” Born in Shiner, Texas he opened his business on 57th Street and Fifth Ave in 1928 and quickly became a part of the New York City's social circle. To understand why this was such an important breakthrough you need to understand that Americans at that time were mainly wearing European jewellery - think Cartier and Van Cleef and now they had their own jewellery designer, Flato.
Again, brooches are no longer simply the preserve of ladies - this brooch looks as good on a tie as a lapel, on a hat as much as a belt. Versatility is everything when it comes to brooches!

Do you offer layaway? Can I pay in instalments?
Yes! We have different ways of doing layaways. Paypal is most popular or via bank transfer. We try to be as flexible as possible, so if you tell us what you need, we will agree the layaway terms on a case by case basis with you. We usually offer a paypal invoice over the period of 3 months, but can happily extend to 6 months if needed. We do not charge interest for instalment payments. Paypal invoice allows you to pay a partial payment whenever is convenient for you.
A 20% up front, non refundable, deposit is required to hold the item, and this counts towards the item total. Payment is then made over the following weeks and the final payment must be made by the agreed end date.
Please note, items bought on layaway are returnable, but the deposit is non refundable. Items are shipped once payment is completed. If payment is not made within the agreed time frame, we will try to work with you to agree a solution, but reserve the right to refund your money (bar the deposit) and re-list the item Please contact us directly to discuss further.
