Art Nouveau & Art Deco: The Antique Jewellery Eras Gen Z is Obsessed With

Scroll through the jewellery boards of any style-conscious Gen Z or Millennial and you'll notice a pattern. Amid the contemporary minimalism and the occasional Y2K throwback, two antique jewellery movements keep appearing: Art Nouveau and Art Deco. These aren't just aesthetic trends — they represent a genuine, growing fascination with two of the most extraordinary periods in jewellery history.

So what is it about these eras that speaks so powerfully to younger collectors? And how do you find your way into them?

Art Nouveau: Nature, Femininity, and the Rejection of the Industrial

Art Nouveau flourished roughly between 1890 and 1910, emerging as a reaction against the mechanisation of the Industrial Revolution. Its jewellers — led by visionaries like René Lalique and Georges Fouquet — turned to the natural world for inspiration: flowers, insects, flowing water, the female form. The results were pieces of extraordinary beauty and originality, where the design mattered as much as the materials.

For a generation that values authenticity, nature, and the handmade, Art Nouveau jewellery resonates deeply. It is anti-industrial by design. It celebrates organic forms over rigid geometry. And it treats jewellery as fine art — a philosophy that feels entirely contemporary.

Our Austro-Hungarian Art Nouveau Silver & 14ct Gold and Diamond Flower Ring is a beautiful example of the movement's signature naturalism — a flower rendered in precious metal with extraordinary delicacy.

Art Deco: Geometry, Glamour, and Modernity

Art Deco emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, and it couldn't be more different in spirit from Art Nouveau. Where Art Nouveau was organic and flowing, Art Deco was geometric and bold. Where Art Nouveau looked to nature, Art Deco looked to the machine age, to ancient Egypt, to the jazz clubs of Paris and New York.

The jewellery of the Art Deco period is characterised by strong lines, contrasting colours — often black and white, or vivid combinations of coloured gemstones — and a sense of confident, unapologetic glamour. It was jewellery for the modern woman: independent, stylish, and unafraid to take up space.

Our German Art Deco Silver Green 'Emerald' Paste, 'White' Diamond Paste & Black Enamel 'Onyx' Cocktail Ring captures the era's signature drama perfectly — bold, graphic, and utterly wearable.

Why These Eras Appeal to Gen Z and Millennials

Both Art Nouveau and Art Deco share qualities that resonate strongly with younger collectors. They represent moments of cultural upheaval and reinvention — periods when artists and craftspeople were questioning the status quo and creating something genuinely new. They prize craftsmanship and originality over mass production. And they offer a visual language that feels both historical and surprisingly modern.

There's also the sustainability dimension. Choosing an Art Nouveau or Art Deco piece means choosing something that already exists — no new mining, no new manufacturing, no new waste. It's the most ethical way to own something truly extraordinary.

How to Start Collecting

If you're drawn to either era, the best advice is to start by looking widely and buying slowly. Visit reputable dealers, handle pieces in person where possible, and read about the history of the movements. Pay attention to what draws you — the florals of Art Nouveau, or the geometry of Art Deco — and let your collection develop organically around your genuine taste.

At Parkin and Gerrish, we're always happy to talk through the history of any piece in our collection and help you find the right starting point for your collecting journey.
