They were much more expensive than diamonds and rubies. Most famously, Cartier's New York Headquarters - Morton Plant House was exchanged for a necklace with a double strand of natural South Sea pearls, valued approx. $1 million dollars in 1917.
During the late 1800s and early 1900s, King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra were the leaders of high society. They set an 'Edwardian style' trend in fashion and jewellery. The most typical Edwardian jewellery incorporated a lavish profusion of pearls and diamonds usually set in platinum.
The Art Deco period enjoyed stands of pearl necklaces getting longer and longer. Art Deco era also brought along cultured pearls, making it much more affordable to wear pearls.
